SAILING LEARNS A FEW LESSONS AT CNU
Hampton at CNU
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Hampton University sailing team finished eighth at the Christopher Newport University 2-On-2 Regatta this past weekend. Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio), Ian Guagliardo, Ryan Campbell (Stafford, Va.), and Chantel Lyles were the sailors chosen to represent the Pirates.

In the preliminary rounds, the Pirates had two wins and four losses. CNU and Fordham both had five wins and one loss. William & Mary, Maryland and Virginia had three wins and three losses. Virginia Tech finished the same as Hampton in the preliminary.

In the final round with the silver fleet, Fordham was perfect with three wins. The host CNU had two wins and one loss. Virginia had one win and two losses, while Maryland did not win in the final round.

Hampton competed in the Blue fleet not winning any of the races but taking it as a learning experience. “It’s been along time since Hampton’s team participated in event like this,” coach Samantha Ficksman said. “The format of competition is strategically different from the majority of our use a fleet racing format.”

Next weekend, Hampton will host the MAISA/SAISA. It is a two-day event, all day Saturday and Sunday. Hampton, Fordham, Monmouth, William & Mary, Old Dominion, CNU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Florida, Charleston and South Florida are scheduled to compete.
