RALEIGH, N.C. – The Hampton University men’s tennis team fell in the finals of the 2009 MEAC Tennis Championships to South Carolina State, 4-0, on Sunday at the Millsbrook Tennis Center.
David Grund of South Carolina State defeated
Gabriel Groh (Taubate, Brazil) 6-3, 6-3 in the number five spot to secure the Bulldogs’ eighth conference crown. The Bulldogs won three singles matches, while the other three went unfinished.
In addition to Grund’s match-clinching win, Tournament Most Outstanding Player Ivan Milivojevic defeated Edson Alves in the number one spot, 6-1, 6-2. Tomas Dobrotka beat
Marcelo Reda (Tremembe, Brazil) 6-0, 6-2 in the number three position.
The Bulldogs also won two of the three doubles matches.
Sung-Kwon Baek (Pusan, Korea) and
Nelio Mattos (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) were behind 4-7 in the third doubles match, which went unfinished.
Mattos, a First Team All-MEAC and All-Rookie selection, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
