FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Hampton University junior Francena McCorory and sophomore Reggie Dixon will travel to the University of Arkansas for the 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held Wednesday through Saturday at John McDonnell Field.
McCorory (Hampton, Va.) will run in the 400-meter dash, coming off her NCAA East Regional title on May 30. She ran a 52.00 to take that event, and McCorory holds the nation’s second-best time of the season, thanks to the 51.75 she ran at the 2009 MEAC Championships. McCorory, an indoor All-American, became just the second Lady Pirate to win an NCAA title back in March, taking the 400-meter dash at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 51.55.
Former Lady Pirate Yvette Lewis owns a pair of NCAA titles, both in the triple jump. She took the 2006 NCAA indoor title, before backing that up with an outdoor championship in 2007.
Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) finished third in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA East Regional, running a season-best 10.21 in the final to qualify for the national meet. Dixon also earned an at-large berth into the 200-meter dash, in which he won the MEAC outdoor crown with a season-best 20.71, and he finished 10th in that event in March at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships.
The first round heats of the women’s 400-meter dash will be run on Wednesday at 7 p.m., with the semifinal heats coming Friday at 7:15 p.m. The women’s 400-meter dash finals will be held Saturday at 12:05 p.m.
The men’s 100-meter dash will kick off on Wednesday, with the first round heats beginning at 6:40 p.m. The semifinals will be run about an hour later, with the finals coming on Friday at 7:45 p.m. he first round of the men’s 200-meter dash will be run on Thursday at 6:25 p.m., with semifinals running at 7:45. The finals will be run Saturday at 12:42 p.m.
Friday’s action from 6 to 9 p.m., as well as Saturday’s action from noon to 2 p.m., will be nationally-televised; Friday’s action will be broadcast on CBS College Sports, while Saturday’s events will be covered on CBS. Should McCorory and Dixon reach their respective event finals, those races will be televised.
