PIRATES, LADY PIRATES TO RUN IN HBCU CLASSIC

Jasmin Branch has paced the Lady Pirates in both of their cross country meets so far this season.
CARY, N.C. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s cross country teams will be competing this Saturday morning in the inaugural Robert Shumake HBCU Cross Country Classic, held in conjunction with the National Scholastic Sports Foundation.

The race will be part of the Great American Cross Country Festival at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday and Saturday. Among the teams joining Hampton at the race will be Morehouse, Bowie State, Livingstone, Virginia State, North Carolina Central, and race host St. Augustine’s, as well as MEAC schools South Carolina State, Winston-Salem State, and North Carolina A&T.

A high school race will also be held during the festival.

The Pirates are coming off a fifth-place finish in last weekend’s William & Mary Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge, where David Kimani (Kenya) paced the team with a 27:30.70 on the 8K course to finish 37th. Bryan Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished in a tie for 42nd after running a 27:39.60, while freshman Berian White (Newark, Del.) ran a 28:20.20 to come in 50th. Fellow freshman Mike Davenport (Pleasantville, N.J.) ran a 28:37.20 to finish 53rd, and Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) came in 58th with a time of 29:07.30.

Bradley Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished 64th with a 30:05.20, and freshman Sean Shelton (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran a 32:59.80 to finish 82nd.

Jasmin Branch (Hampton, Va.) led the Lady Pirates by finishing 18th in the 6K women’s run with a time of 22:54.10, while Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) came in 44th after running a 24:09.00. Freshman Tyreka Arrington (Lanham, Md.) ran a 24:58.70 to finish 59th, and Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished 64th with a 25:12.40. Jahlisa Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 25:38.20 to finish 68th, while Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) came in 81st after running a 30:07.90.

The Lady Pirates finished sixth in the team standings.
