NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Hampton University men's and women's tennis teams each defeated Norfolk State on Friday to open the 2010 season.
The Lady Pirates (1-0) won 4-2. In singles play, reigning MEAC Player of the year
Na-Hyun Baek (Seoul, Korea) won 6-1, 6-0;
Jovanna Sangria (Long Beach, Calif.) won 6-0, 6-1;
Maria Ycaza (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; and
Tabita Daolio won 6-4, 6-3.
The Pirates (1-0) defeated the Spartans 4-1.
Gellert Varga (Becej, Serbia) won his match 6-1, 6-3;
Edson Alves won 6-4, 6-2;
Alvin Fludd won 6-1, 6-3; and
Kenneth Green won 6-3, 6-0.
The Spartans (0-3) picked up their lone victory when Arsenio Culver beat
Nelio Mattos (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
