HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished third in the Edward Teach Memorial on Saturday and Sunday at Strawberry Banks.
The Pirates finished with 56 points, five points behind second-place William & Mary. Old Dominion won the regatta with 24 points, sweeping both the A and B Divisions.
Hampton scored 32 points in the A Division and 24 points in the B Division. Hampton won one race in the A Division to go along with a second-place finish and three third-place efforts. The Pirates also won a race in the B Division, on top of finishing second three times and third three times.
Seniors
Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Hykeem Gaddis (Las Vegas, Nev.) raced in the A Division, while freshman
Giuditta Di Laghi (Albenga, Italy) and junior
Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.) competed in the B Division.
Saturday's action took place under rainy skies and northeast winds between 12 and 18 knots, while Sunday's weather also saw light rain, but higher winds – out of the north-northeast at 8-16 knots.
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday and Sunday, when part of the team heads to Kings Point, N.Y. for the MAISA Laser Qualifier and the rest of the team heads to Williamsburg, Va. for the Colony Cup.
Di Laghi will be at the U.S. Naval Academy this weekend, competing in the MAISA Singlehanded Championships by virtue of her second-place finish at the Laser South Radial Open on Sept. 10-11.
