PIRATES SET FOR ANOTHER SHOWDOWN WITH ODU

Hampton Game Notes  | ODU Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
For the third time in as many seasons, the Hampton University football team will square off against local rival Old Dominion on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium at 6 p.m.

It will be the Pirates' 2012 home opener.

The Pirates (0-1) dropped their season opener at Tennessee Tech on Aug. 30, while the Monarchs (1-0) won their 2012 debut 57-23 over Duquesne. ODU is nationally ranked in both polls, coming in at No. 7 in the Sports Network poll and No. 5 in the FCS Coaches Poll.

The Pirates are 0-2 all-time against the Monarchs, and this will be the third straight season in which the two teams meet. Hampton and ODU first squared off in 2010 at Armstrong Stadium, with ODU coming away with a 28-14 win. The Pirates made the trip across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel last season, falling 45-42 to the Monarchs at Foreman Field.

The Pirates are 2-12 all-time against teams from the CAA. Hampton is 2-0 all-time against James Madison; 0-3 against New Hampshire; 0-2 against Old Dominion; 0-2 against Rhode Island; 0-1 against Richmond; 0-1 against Villanova; and 0-3 against William & Mary.

The Pirates have not beaten a CAA school since beating James Madison 31-28 in 2002.

Hampton went 5-1 at home last season, with their lone loss at Armstrong Stadium coming against Howard. All told, the Pirates beat Florida A&M, Princeton, North Carolina Central, Delaware State, and Morgan State at home in 2011, averaging 28.7 point per game in their home contests. For his career as head coach, Donovan Rose is 10-6 at Armstrong Stadium.

Since 1943, the Pirates are 44-24-1 in home openers, and Hampton has won its last nine Armstrong Stadium debuts. Hampton beat Florida A&M in the 2011 home opener 23-17 before a national ESPNU audience, and in 2010, the Pirates beat North Carolina A&T 35-21 in their home opener.

Hampton's 2009 home opener was also Rose's head coaching debut, and Hampton beat North Carolina Central 31-24. The Pirates last dropped a home opener in 2002, when they fell 28-26 to Southwest Missouri State.
