CARY, N.C. – The Hampton University cross country teams competed on Saturday at the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge and came away with top two finishes.  The Lady Pirates won their 17-team 5k race, while the men took second in the 16-team 8k race.
The victory for the Lady Pirates was their first in a race since the Panther Invitational on October 10, 2014.
All five scoring runners for Hampton finished in the top ten as freshman
Alycia Higgins took fourth place to lead Hampton covering the 5k course at the Wake Medical Soccer Park in 19:35.4.Â
Pollyanna Velasco was sixth in 19:40.0 while
Amanda Delacruz was eighth in 19:58.0. Rounding out the top 10 was
Kayla Key in ninth in a time of 20:07.3 and
Asia Johnson in tenth at 20:08.4.
Hampton scored 37 points to win the women's title with North Carolina A&T State in second (59), Winston-Salem State (70) and Morgan State (116) rounding out the top four.
On the men's side
Emmanuel Too was the top runner for Hampton finishing fourth covering the 8k course in 25:42.7. Â
Stanley Davis was 12
th in 27:00.3, while Tayvon Burress was 21
st in 28:08.8. Rounding out the five Hampton runners was
Eric Ellis in 39
th in 30:03.5 and
Khalil Gary in 61
st in 31:46.4.
In the 16-team, 115-runner field, North Carolina A&T State won the men's side scoring 47 points while Hampton came in second with 70. Morehouse was third with 76 points, while Benedict rounded out the top four with 100.
The next race for Hampton will keep them locally as the team will compete in the Christopher Newport University Invitational on October 15.
