IOWA TOPS HAMPTON 84-51

IOWA CITY, IA. – A pair of runs to end quarters for homestanding Iowa helped the Hawkeyes defeat Hampton 84-51 on Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
 
A close first quarter saw Malia Tate-DeFreitas open the game with a 3-pointer and a Georgianna Gilbeaux layup gave Hampton an early 5-0 lead.   A 3-pointer from Monnazjea Finney-Smith put Hampton up 10-8 with 4:31 left in the quarter.   Tate-DeFreitas closed the quarter with a jumper to bring Hampton to 19-16 after the first quarter.  
 
That jumper started a run of eight straight points by Tate-DeFreitas as a three-point play with 8:30 left in the second tied the game at 21-all.  After Iowa pushed the advantage out to seven, a  3-pointer from Tate-DeFretias cut it in down to 33-29 with 3:44 left.  The Hawkeyes then reeled off an 11-3 run to close the half as Ashley Bates' 3-pointer with 19 seconds left stopped the scoring as Hampton trailed 44-32 at the half.
 
Iowa broke the game open with a 15-4 run to close the third quarter.   Hampton used a pair of Tate-DeFreitas layups to get within 48-40 at the 6:30 mark, but a pair of free throws by Tania Davis ended the quarter with Iowa up 63-44.  They opened the fourth quarter scoring the first ten points as back-to-back layups from Hannah Stewart put Iowa up 73-44 with 5:53. 
 
Tate-DeFreitas scored 22 points to lead everyone in scoring.  She is now one point from passing LaShondra Dixon-Gordon for second on the Hampton University all-time scoring list.  Tate-DeFreitas  has 1,966 career points, while Dixon-Gordon is next with 1,967.  Finney-Smith joined her in double figures with 10 points, while Ashley Bates added eight as Hampton fell to 0-2.  Ally Disterhoft was the leading scorer for Iowa pacing four in double figures with 16 points.

Hampton now will visit North Carolina State University on Wednesday night for a 7 pm tip in Reynolds Coliseum.
