RALEIGH, N.C. – Homestanding N.C. State opened the second half hitting six-of-seven from 3-point range to score a 81-56 win over Hampton on Wednesday night in Reynolds Coliseum.
Malia Tate-DeFreitas, who shared leading scorer honors with
Monnazjea Finney-Smith with 16 points, became the school's all-time Division I scoring leader, appropriately for her, with a steal and layup with 5:22 left in the first quarter. She passed LaShondra Dixon-Gordon for second on the school's all-time scoring list only trailing Jackie Dolberry from 1985-89 who scored 2,727 points.
A 3-pointer from DeJane James with 4:27 left brought Hampton to down 24-21. Jennifer Mathurin scored eight of the 14 to close the half and her jumper at the horn gave the Wolfpack a 38-26 halftime advantage.
In the first, a
Jephany Brown jumper gave Hampton its only lead of the night at 2-0. The Wolfpack went on a 12-2 run as back to-back Dominique Wilson buckets gave them a 12-4 lead with 6:01 left in the quarter. Tate-DeFreitas stole an entry pass and went uncontested for her layup to pass Dixon-Gordon in the record books.
To start the second half, the Wolfpack went on a blistering start hitting six of first seven from behind the arc. A 3-pointer from Aislinn Konig put the Wolfpack up 63-36 with 2:13 left in the third quarter . For the third quarter, State was 7-of-12 from the field and 7-of-11 from behind the arc as they took a 65-38 lead after three.
For the game, Hampton was 22-of-62 from the field (35.5%), 4-of-15 from 3-point range (26.7%) and 8-of-14 from the foul line (57.1%). Brown added eight points and was the leading rebounder for Hampton with six. Wilson was the leading scorer for N.C. State with 23 points.
Hampton will now visit Columbia, S.C. on Sunday for three-games in the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge starting with No. 4/3 South Carolina at 3 pm.
