BALTIMORE, MD. – The Hampton University volleyball team finished off a weekend in Baltimore with a five-set victory over Coppin State winning 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 24-26, 17-15 on Sunday.

Reeana Richardson topped the Lady Pirates with her second double-double of the weekend with 22 kills and a season-high 11 digs.  Freshman Micah Leavell recorded a season-high 17 kills and six digs, while Brianna Lilly recorded a season-high 49 assists.  Summer Humes set a career-high in digs with 16 as well for Hampton (2-11, 1-1).

In a match that saw 33 ties and 12 lead changes, Hampton took the lead for good in the first set on a Richardson kill to go up 7-6.  The lead got up to as many as five points on a Kyndall Nicholas kill to lead 18-13 as Hampton won the opening set 25-21.

The second set saw Hampton get to 13-12 after kills from Richardson and Lilly.   Coppin then took control of the second set using a 9-2 run to go up 22-14 after a Valiyah Barnes kill as they tied the match winning the second set 25-18.

Neither team held more than a two-point lead throughout the early stages of the third set before a Richardson kill capped a run of six out of eight points for Hampton to lead 20-16 en route to a 25-20 third set win.

As Hampton took a 24-21 lead in the fourth set on a Richardson ace, Coppin State returned the comeback.  Five straight points by the hosts closed the fourth set and tied the match at two-all with a 26-24 Coppin win.

The final set saw Hampton return the closeout to capture its first MEAC win of the year.   After Coppin State took a 15-14 lead on a Guro Froberg kill, Hampton scored the last three points with Leavell's 17th kill giving the guests a 17-15 win.

Hampton will play its first home matches of 2016 on Friday, Sept. 30 when they host Delaware State University at Holland Hall.
