BALANCED ATTACK GIVES PIRATES FIRST MEAC WIN

HAMPTON, Va. – With four players in double figures, the Hampton University men's basketball team picked up its first MEAC win of the season on Wednesday night, upending North Carolina A&T 68-53 at the HU Convocation Center.
 
The Pirates (4-10, 1-0 MEAC) have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.
 
Kalin Fisher led the Pirates with a career-high 16 points off the bench, going 6-for-8 from the floor and hitting two 3-pointers. Jermaine Marrow and Lysander Bracey each added 12 points – with Marrow adding a career high-tying five assists – while Lawrence Cooks chipped in 11 points and three assists.
 
Trevond Barnes led the team with nine boards and four blocks, both career highs.
 
Hampton shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the floor and made nine of 27 3-pointers. The Pirates also went 13-for-16 (81.3 percent) from the free throw line and held a 37-26 advantage in rebounding.
 
The Aggies jumped out to a 12-6 lead early, before the Pirates rattles off eight straight points and took a 14-12 lead with 11:27 left in the half following a three from Bracey. Amari Hamilton gave the lead back to the Aggies with a three of his own 27 seconds later, and Davaris McGowens extended the lead to 17-14 with 8:04 left in the half.
 
But the Pirates went on a 7-0 spurt to take a 21-17 lead on a Marrow layup. The Aggies fought back, tying the score on three separate occasions, the latest at 29-29 with 27 seconds remaining. But Bracey nailed another three with nine seconds left, sending the Pirates into the break with a 32-29 lead.
 
Bracey had nine points to lead the Pirates at the break.
 
The Aggies tied the game at 32-32 in the opening moments of the second half on a Hamilton trey, but the Pirates responded with a 10-3 run to take a 42-35 lead after a Cooks trey with 17:03 remaining. Charles Wilson-Fisher converted a 3-point play with 13:03 remaining to give Hampton a 49-37 lead.
 
N.C. A&T responded with a 12-4 run, cutting the lead to 53-49 with 8:16 left after a pair of Eliel Gonzalez free throws. Hampton responded by going on a 15-0 run of its own, taking a 68-49 lead with 1:36 remaining after Barnes hit a pair of free throws.
 
The Aggies scored the last four points of the game.
 
Despite shooting almost 42 percent in the first half, the Aggies (1-13, 0-1 MEAC) shot just 38.1 percent (16-for-42) from the floor. N.C. A&T, in losing its 13th straight game, made just six field goals in the second half and had 15 turnovers on the night.
 
Hamilton led the Aggies with 12 points.
