NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University indoor track teams opened their 2017-18 seasons on Saturday competing in the Holiday Open at the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
The Lady Pirates amassed 190 points to win the women's division, while the men's team came in second with 120 points.
Leading the women in the opener was
Jaelen Leonard who took first place in the 200 meters (25.16), long jump (18-9 3/4 ) and was a member of the 4x400 relay (3:55.77). Other first place finishers included
Mallory Pitchford in the 60 hurdles (8.75),
On the men's side, Brenan Garrett won his semifinal heat of the 60 meters (6.86) and was a part of the winning 4x400 meter relay team (3:17.86).Â
Jaelen Williams won the 600 meters (1:20.33) and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay.
The teams are now off until January 6 when both participate in the Father Diamond Invitational in Fairfax.
