CHATTANOOGA, Tn. -- Senior
Monnazjea Finney-Smith had 17 points draining five three-pointers as Hampton fell to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 64-52 on Thursday afternoon.
Hampton (2-8) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after triples from
Dejane' James and Finney-Smith along with a
K'lynn Willis free throw. A jumper from Arianne Whitaker with 5:30 left in the opening quarter put the Mocs up 10-7. Â
Allina Starr put Hampton up 13-12 with a jumper at the 3:21 mark of the first, which proved to be the final lead of the day for the Lady Pirates. Â
In the second quarter, Starr hit a jumper with 7:25 left to tie the game 18-all. That was as close as it got from there as UTC went on an 11-3 run to lead 29-21 on a Shelbie Davenport layup with 96 seconds left in the half.
Jephany Brown jumper with 5:17 left in the third brought Hampton to 40-30. The Mocs answered with nine straight points to take a 49-30 lead on a Whitaker layup with 36 seconds left in the third.
Hampton made a flurry in the fourth trimming a 16-point deficit in half as a Finney-Smith layup brought Hampton to 60-52 with 48 seconds left.
Ashley Bates, Starr and James added eight points apiece for Hampton as the Lady Pirates now travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Samford on Saturday at 3pm EST.
