CONWAY, S.C. – The Hampton University men's basketball team saw its season end Wednesday night with an 83-67 loss to Coastal Carolina in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in the HTC Center.
The Pirates finished the season 14-17.
Jermaine Marrow led three Pirates in double figures with 17 points on 8-for-19 shooting, while
Akim Mitchell added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
AJ Astroth came off the bench to add 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting.
The Pirates shot 38.6 percent (27-for-70) from the floor and made six of 24 3-pointers.
The Pirates scored the game's first basket – a three from
Kalin Fisher – before Coastal Carolina answered with a 15-4 run to take a 15-7 lead after an Elijah Wilson layup with 11:30 left in the half. A DeMario Beck dunk at the 4:49 mark gave the Chanticleers a 29-22 lead.
Mitchell answered with a tipin 39 seconds later, kicking off a 9-2 Hampton run that saw the Pirates tie the game at 31-31 on a Mitchell trey with 1:26 left in the half.
That was the score at the break.
Seven unanswered points to open the second half gave the Pirates a 38-31 lead after Marrow hit a three with 17:50 left in the contest. Marrow later hit a jumper to put the Pirates on top 51-48 with 12:13 remaining.
From there, the teams traded the lead a few times, with Hampton going up 55-54 with 10:36 remaining after an Astroth layup. But Coastal responded by going on a 16-5 run to take a 70-60 lead with 3:32 remaining after a Jaylen Shaw layup.
In all, following Hampton's last lead, Coastal closed the game on a 29-12 run.
Coastal Carolina (17-17) shot 55.6 percent (35-for-63) from the floor – including a 68.8 percent clip in the second half – and made seven of 19 3-pointers. The Chanticleers outrebounded the Pirates 44-28 and held a 50-28 edge in points in the paint.
Shaw led four Coastal players in double figures with 22 points.
