HAMPTON, Va. – Behind a 25-2 closing run in the last nine minutes of the game, Hampton scored a big 50-42 win over Old Dominion on Monday night at the HU Convocation Center.
The win was the first in now seven meetings between Hampton and ODU.Â
Old Dominion (2-16) held Hampton to single digits in the first and third quarters as Hampton opened 1-for-12 in the first and a 2-for-8 performance in the third scoring three and five points respectively.
The Monarchs pushed the lead to its largest of the night at 40-25 on a layup from Taylor Edwards with 9:11 left. Hampton (6-9) scored the next 16 points to take its first lead of the game on a jumper from
Mikayla Sayle with 2:36 left for a 41-40 lead.
Starting that run was a pair of triples from
K'lynn Willis and a pair of buckets from
Monnazjea Finney-Smith helped get Hampton to 40-39 with 4:14 left. Hampton turned up its pressure in the final quarter forcing seven turnovers in the 16-0 portion of that game-clinching run.
A pair of Mikayla Timmons free throws with 2:36 left slowed the massive Hampton run as ODU took a 42-41 lead. A put back by
Ashley Bates with 2:09 left gave Hampton a 43-42 lead that it would never relinquish.
The Lady Pirates forced six more ODU turnovers in the final 2:36 as a pair of free throws from
Jephany Brown and
Dejane' James helped seal the 50-42 win.
Brown was the leading scorer for Hampton with 12 points, seven boards, three steals and two blocked shots. James was right behind her with 11 points, three assists and two steals, while Willis added 10 points and three steals off the bench.
Hampton ended the game hitting 14-of-45 from the floor (31.1%) and was 17-of-29 from the foul line (58.6%). The Lady Pirates forced 25 ODU turnovers with 13 coming in the final quarter.
ODU was topped by Edwards with 10 points, six rebounds as the lone double figure scorer. They were 15-of-48 from the floor (31.3%), 8-of-12 from the foul line (66.7%) and outrebounded Hampton 39-33.
Hampton returns to MEAC action on Saturday at 4 pm to face Savannah State in Savannah, GA.
