HAMPTON, Va. – Behind a vintage Hampton Lady Pirate defensive attack that held visiting Coppin State to the lowest point total allowed by Hampton since 2013, the Lady Pirates cruised to a 67-35 win on Wednesday night.
 
The 35 points allowed was the lowest opponent total since Bethune-Cookman scored 28 in a 74-28 loss on March 3, 2013.   Coppin State scored 15 points in the first half which was the lowest half for an opponent since Old Dominion scored 19 in the second half of the Jan. 15 meeting this year.
 
After giving up the first bucket of the game, Hampton used an 11-0 run in the later stages of the first quarter to take a 23-10 lead on a Mikayla Sayle jumper with 49 seconds left.
 
In the second quarter, Hampton held the Eagles to a 1-for-13 showing from the floor as a Jephany Brown jumper gave Hampton a 40-15 halftime advantage.  They kept the pressure up in the third with a Sayle jumper closing the quarter with Hampton up 52-24.  Hampton pushed the lead to as many as 36 points with 5:41 left on a pair of Brown free throws to lead 62-26.
 
Brown was the leading scorer for Hampton with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead four in double figures.  Monnazjea Finney-Smith added 12 and seven boards, Allina Starr had 10, nine rebounds and five assists, while Ashley Bates chipped in with 10 points and three steals.
 
Hampton is now on the road for the next three games starting with a visit to co-league leader North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 2 pm.
