HAMPTON, Va. – A wild fourth quarter saw Hampton rally from a 14-point deficit to take a 63-60 win over Morgan State on Senior Day Saturday.
The Bears closed the first half on an 8-1 run to lead 31-26 after a foul shot by
Allina Starr with four seconds left in the opening half. In the third period the lead grew to 14 points on three occasions, the last being 48-34 on a Lexus Spears layup with 22 seconds left.
A pair of free throws by
Mikayla Sayle with 16 seconds left in the quarter started a 20-2 run over the next 6:10 as Sayle hit a free throw to lead 54-50.Â
Ashley Bates had a steal and layup which tied the game at 50 with 5:34 remaining.
K'lynn Willis with a free throw gave Hampton a 58-53 lead with 93 seconds left, but Morgan State used a 3-ball from Jihayah Chavis and a layup from Spears to tie the game at 58-all with 34 seconds left.
Hampton worked for another shot and senior
Monnazjea Finney-Smith banked in a 3-ball from the left wing with six seconds left to put Hampton back up 61-58. After a layup by Chavis with three seconds left brought the score to 61-60, Willis drained two free throws to ice the win.
Sayle went out on senior night with a career high 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Bates added 12 points and five boards and Finney-Smith chipped in with 11 points for Hampton.
Hampton closes out the regular season on Thursday at Norfolk State in a 5:30 pm tip.
