SOFTBALL RUN RULES HOWARD TWICE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team took home the honors in the Battle of the Real HU on the diamond Saturday sweeping a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader 8-0 and 9-1 over Howard.

In game one, Hampton put up four runs in the second inning on an RBI double by Morgan Crawford, a RBI single from Lorena Alvarez, a sacrifice fly by Daniella Milloy and a throwing error to take an early 4-0 lead.   In the third Hampton put up two more runs on sacrifice bunts by Cassidy Blackwell and Crawford for a 6-0 lead.

Milloy scored the lone run in the fourth starting with an infield single and advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Alvarez.  She stole third before a DaSha Hill single to left plated her to lead 7-0.  Hampton ended the game via run-rule with an unearned run in the fifth as Blackwell singled and was pinch ran for by Brianna Anderson.  She stole second and third before scoring as the throw to third went into left field to score.

Seven different Lady Pirates had a hit apiece in game one, while Blackwell scored twice and Crawford drove in a pair.  Allie Hotetz struck out six and allowed two hits for the shutout win.

Game two saw Howard scratch a run in the top of the first before Hampton tied it with one in the bottom of the second.  Blackwell reached on an error and Ashley Grassini doubled in pinch-runner Anderson who had stolen second to tie the game.

Two more runs in the fourth for Hampton came off the bat of Grassini who smashed a two-run shot to left field for a 3-0 lead.   Another single run in the fifth for Hampton came off an error as Hill singled, stole second and scored on an error.  The Lady Pirates took advantage of a pair of Howard errors in the sixth to score five runs for its second run-rule ending.

Hill was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Grassini was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three driven in to lead Hampton.  Hotetz struck out five and allowed three hits for her seventh win on the season.

Hampton is now off until Friday when it participates in the Florida Gators Round Robin facing the host Gators at 4 pm.
