HAMPTON, Va. – Mother Nature didn't completely wipe out the Hampton Lady Pirates tennis schedule this weekend, though she did put a crimp into one match.
A late Friday afternoon storm pushed the dual match with Longwood to finish up on Saturday afternoon with Longwood holding a 5-4 lead in the third set at line five singles. The Lancers took the final set to score a 4-3 win over Hampton.
In the MEAC match that started Saturday's action, Hampton won four of the five completed singles matches to take a 4-2 win over the Bears of Morgan State.
Against Longwood, Hampton won both completed doubles matches as
Mariam Mitaishvili and
Yulia Kapitanova won 6-4 at line one and the tandem of
Cherise Slocombe and
Kiah Turner won 6-3 at line two.
In singles, Kapitanova scored a 6-1, 6-0 win at line two and
Julia d'Auvergne took a win at line six by default for Hampton. Longwood scored wins at line one, three, four and the clincher at line five as Tanja Skalda defeated
Haley Mullins 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
On Saturday, it was the reverse of the Longwood match as Morgan State took the doubles point winning both completed matches at line one and two.Â
Hampton got on the board in singles with Turner winning 6-4, 6-1 at line three over Peggy Rooke to trim the deficit to 2-1. Morgan State won at line one, but Kapitanova pulled Hampton even with another 6-1, 6-0 win at line two.
Slocombe gave Hampton a 3-2 lead in the dual match with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Oriane Yehouenou before it was up to Mullins at line six. Â She scored a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dana Santiago to give Hampton the 4-2 MEAC win.
Hampton is now on the road Monday to face Delaware State at 2 pm.
