FAIRFAX, Va. – The Hampton University women's tennis team scored a big non-conference win on Wednesday knocking off George Mason 5-2 in Fairfax.
Hampton (5-6) took the doubles point winning two of the three matches. The number one tandem of
Mariam Mitaishvili and
Yulia Kapitanova defeated Sydney Green and Brianna Gibbs 6-4, while
Cherise Slocombe and
Kiah Turner won at line two 6-1 over Rachel Lee and Hannah Yang.
In singles, Hampton jumped out to a 3-0 advantage winning at lines two and four. Kapitanova continued her impressive freshman season winning 6-0, 6-1 over Gibbs and
Haley Mullins won 6-4, 7-5 at line four.
Following a George Mason win at number one, Slocombe clinched the dual match win for Hampton with a 6-3, 6-2 win at line three over Hannah Yang. Ana Romanova finished the win with a three-set victory at line five singles winning the tie-breaker third set 10-6.
Hampton returns to MEAC action on Thursday facing Norfolk State at 4pm in Norfolk.
