Montrell Coley was a star football player at Hampton from 1997-00. During his time in Pirate gear, the team compiled records of 10-2 in 1997, 9-3 in 1998, 8-4 in 1999 and 7-4 in 2000. That period saw HU capture two MEAC championships, one Heritage Bowl title and make two appearances in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

Coley compiled 3,838 yards in his career, picking up 1,582 yards during the 2000 season. In his career with the Pirates, Coley had 19 100-yard rushing games and four games in which he rushed for more than 200 yards, with a high of 253 yards occurring in a game against Morgan State in 2000.

For three consecutive seasons he led the Pirates in scoring, including his 84 points as a sophomore in 1998, his 52 points as a junior in 1999 and his 172 points as a senior in 2000. 

Coley was selected to the Sports Network’s Division I-AA All-America team in 2000. That same season, he was named first-team All-MEAC. Coley also was a dual selectee to the SBN Black College All-America team and he was named to the All-Virginia team. One of the highlights of his career was his participation in the Hula Bowl in Hawaii following his senior season.
