Aggies bite Hampton, 3-1

Greensboro, N.C.– Despite a sluggish start the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies were able to pull themselves together and go on to beat the Hampton University Lady Pirates in what will count as a non-conference match, 3-1 (31-29, 18-30, 23-30, 18-30).
Hampton was led by Texas natives Chavanca Hoskins (Dallas, Texas/ Lincoln HS) and Morgan Williams (Duncanville, Texas/ Duncanville HS). Hoskins picked up her eighth double-double of the season, knocking down 15 kills and 11 digs, while Williams chipped in with 21 kills, 15 digs and an impressive .312 hitting percentage. Hoskins registered her 43rd career double-double and Williams’ garnered her 13th.
Sophomore Ese Ighedosa (Kansas City, Mo. / Center Senior HS) added 7 kills and five blocks, while sophomore setter Jasmin Elder (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Gwynn HS) handed out 41 assists.
Arlene Mitchell led the way for the Lady Aggies with 23 kills, 11 digs for her 31st career double-double.
Brenden Chatman added a double-double of her own, with 11 kills and 43 assists. She also had six digs. In all, the Aggies had five different players record seven or more kills.
After losing the first game, the Aggies dominated. Mitchell and her twin sister Darlene, combined for all six points (all on kills) during a 6-1 Aggies run in the fourth game that N.C. A&T an 11-4 lead.
The Lady Pirates were never able to get any closer, and were down by as many 14 in the fourth game when an Ighedosa attack error made it 26-12. Darlene Mitchell ended the match with a thunderous kill set up by Chatman.
N.C. A&T’s Aggies weren’t as powerful in Game 1. Two straight attack errors from Arlene Mitchell and Brenden Chatman gave Hampton a 19-12 lead. The Aggies fought back to tie on an Ighedosa attack error. But two kills from Morgan Williams helped HU build a 25-21 advantage.
The Aggies again fought back but Hoskins recorded two straight kills, and Arlene Mitchell misfired on an attack to give the Pirates the game.
The Lady Pirates fall to 5-9 on the season, while the Aggies improve to 9-6. The Pirates are back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m., when they face the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
