Tribe hands Hampton seventh consecutive defeat

Williamsburg, VA. – The Hampton University volleyball team picked up its seventh consecutive loss against non-conference foe William & Mary with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-22, 30-10) defeat Tuesday night in Williamsburg.
As a team, Hampton (7-18, 2-6 MEAC) hit a .144 (31-17-97). Individually, the Pirates were led by senior Chavanca Hoskins (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS), who recorded 11 kills and 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Sophomores Ebonie Vincent (Temecula, Calif. /UC-Riverside) and Morgan Williams (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS) contributed with seven kills apiece.
Hampton utilized a 5-0 run early in the opening set to take an 8-3 advantage. Nonetheless, the Tribe responded and gradually chipped away at the lead, evening the score at 12 following a kill by Katie McCarney. The teams remained close with W&M up by just one, 18-17, before the Tribe exploded on a 9-1 run, capped by a Lindsey Pflugner ace, to take a 27-18 lead. The Tribe sealed the set with an Abbi Owens put-away.
The Lady Pirates led 5-4 in the early portion of the second game but William & Mary rattled off a 6-0 run to take a 10-5 lead. HU called a timeout and cut the lead to three, but The Tribe put together a 5-0 spurt, capped by an Owens kill, to go ahead, 16-8. While the blue and white narrowed the margin to five points, 20-15, but the Tribe managed to maintain the lead and win the game.
With the score knotted at three in the final frame, W&M went on a 12-1 run, punctuated by a Bohman kill, to take a 14-3 advantage. Ahead by 10 points, 18-8, the Tribe put together another impressive burst, tallying 11 of the next 12 points to go ahead 29-9. Powell closed out the set and the match with her seventh put-away of the stanza.
The Lady Pirates return home on Nov. 3 to square off against Coppin State for a 6 p.m. showdown in Holland Hall.
