Greensboro, N.C. – A season-high 39 turnovers spelled doom for the Hampton University Lady Pirates as they suffered a 73-41 loss to North Carolina A&T State University here on Monday, their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss in nine days.
The loss dropped the Lady Pirates to 6-2 in conference play and 12-8 overall, while the Aggies of North Carolina A&T improved to 8-0 in conference play and 15-5 overall.
In the first half, it was all NC A&T as the Lady Pirates just could not get things going in their favor. Hampton hit just 25 percent of their shots in the half, connecting on 13 of 38 field goals tries. NC A&T, meanwhile, shot 46 percent, going 12 of 28, en route to a 35-23 lead at the half
The second half was no better for Hampton as the Lady Pirates shot just 14 percent from the field, making only four field goals in the last 20 minutes of play.
“We didn’t play Hampton basketball tonight,” stated HU head coach Walter Mebane. “We couldn’t hit free throws and in the second half it just seemed like we couldn’t make a basket.”
Hampton shot a mere 20 percent (11-of-54) on the night but they were able to out-rebound the Lady Aggies 47-to-44. Hampton was held to a season low 18 points in the second half and shot 54 percent (19-of-35) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Pirates were led by Ashlee Finley, who recorded another double-double as she scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on the night for Hampton. Brittany Taylor-James scored a team and game-high 18 points for the Aggies.
“We’ll head back and get ready for Delaware State on Saturday,” said Mebane. “It’s going to be a dog fight as always, so we’re looking forward to that game.”
Hampton will be back in action on Saturday, February 9 as they travel to Dover, Del. to face the Lady Hornets of Delaware State University, who captured the MEAC tournament last March. Tip-off is set of 1:30 p.m. with the men’s to follow on ESPN2 at 4:05 p.m.
