HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished third at the Hampton Bay Days meet on Saturday and Sunday at Strawberry Banks near the campus of Hampton University.
The Pirates finished with 61 points, 15 points behind meet champion Old Dominion, which finished with 46 points. University of Virginia came in second overall with 51 points.
Hampton finished in a tie for third with Loyola (Md.) in the A division with 37 points, with
Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Ian Guagliardo (Fredericksburg, Va.) competing.
Shane Rickie Horsford (Antigua, West Indies) and
Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.) competed in the B division, taking that title with 24 points.
Saturday's action took place with strong winds and decent-sized waves, helping the Pirates on the water. Rain and fog littered the course, and six boats capsized, but Hampton finished strong and earned its best placing of the young season.
This past weekend's result, under the direction of first-year head coach
Alessandro Ambrosi, was featured in
Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use, an independent weekly publication of southern Chesapeake Bay racing.
The Pirates will return to action on Oct. 24-25, when they will compete in the Webb Regatta in Newport News, Va., hosted by Christopher Newport University.
