HAMPTON, Va. – Nine Hampton University student-athletes have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars for the 2008-09 school year, including five on the first team.
Women's bowling had two student-athletes on the Arthur Ashe First Team: junior psychology major
Ashley Hampton (New Jersey City, N.J.) and sophomore pharmacy major
Kiara Williams (Chicago, Ill.). Both bowlers have a 3.61 cumulative GPA, with Hampton recording a 3.81 in the fall 2008 semester and Williams earning a 3.45.
Sailing senior and English arts major
Leslee Williams (Naples, Italy) was also named First Team due to her 3.58 cumulative GPA and 3.9 fall 2008 GPA, as were junior electrical engineering major
Darius Johnson (Sussex, Va.) from the football team and senior psychology major
Barbara Davis (Manassas, Va.) from the women's basketball team. Johnson has a 3.91 cumulative GPA, while Davis has a perfect 4.0.
Junior
Namon Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.), who majors in architecture and Spanish, and senior aviation electronic systems major
Kevin Teel (Bowie, Md.), both from the football team, were named to the Second Team; Freeman has a 3.43 cumulative GPA, while Teel graduated with a 3.3.
Pirates sophomore placekicker and health & physical education, recreation & tourism major
Carlo Turavani (Ontario, Canada) and junior electrical engineering major
Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.) from the softball team were Third Team selections. Turavani has a 3.27 cumulative GPA, with a 3.6 in the fall 2008 semester, while Jeffries earned a 3.25 overall and a 3.2 in the fall 2008 term.
To be honored, student-athletes must compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses and communities.
