PIRATES TO HOST GEORGIA STATE IN HOME OPENER

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will hold its home opener on Tuesday, when the Pirates take on the Panthers of Georgia State at the HU Convocation Center at 7 p.m.

The Pirates (5-1), in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., are on a five-game winning streak following Sunday's 70-64 win over High Point at the Millis Center. Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) scored a season-high 33 points, thanks in large part to a 19-for-23 effort from the free throw line, while junior guard Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 13 points and junior guard Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) added 11.

Junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) had a career-high seven rebounds and seven blocks for the Pirates.

The Panthers (2-2) are coming off a 70-61 overtime loss to Samford on Saturday at the GSU Sports Arena. Freshman guard Javonte Maynor led Georgia State with 12 points, while junior forward Brandon McGee added nine points and seven rebounds.

Since moving to Division I in 1995, Hampton is 1-0 all-time against the Panthers. Hampton and Georgia State first met on Dec. 3, 2008, when the Pirates beat the Panthers 62-53 at the GSU Sports Arena. Brandon Tunnell scored a team-high 14 points in that contest.

The Panthers were picked to finish 11th in the CAA this season, after going 12-20 and 5-13 in conference play in 2009-10. Eight newcomers compliment two seniors in guards Marques Johnson and Dante Curry, as well as talented junior guard Jihad Ali.

Johnson leads the Panthers is scoring so far this season at 9.3 points per game, while Maynor is averaging 9.0 points a contest. Junior forward Eric Buckner leads Georgia State in rebounding, pulling down 7.0 boards per game.

Georgia State is scoring 68.0 points per game while allowing opponents just 66.0 points per contest.

Since moving to Division I in 1995, Hampton is 11-30 against teams currently in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Pirates are 1-2 against Delaware, 1-0 against Georgia State, 1-4 against George Mason, 0-2 against James Madison, 2-4 against Old Dominion, 0-2 against Towson, 1-7 against Virginia Commonwealth and 5-9 against William & Mary.
