FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Hampton University volleyball team dropped its first match of the Northern Arizona Fiesta Bowl at the Rolle Activity Center on Friday, as New Mexico won 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-14).
New Mexico hit .277 as a team, taking advantage of 27 kills and just nine errors in 65 total attacks. The Lobos (2-1) hit a team-best .389 (nine kills, two errors in 18 attacks) in the third set and .286 (nine kills, three errors in 21 attacks) in the first set.
New Mexico also held an 8-0 advantage in service aces.
Hampton (1-3) hit -.108 as a team, recording 14 kills and 23 errors in 83 total attacks. The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .000 (seven kills, seven errors in 32 attacks) in the third set.
New Mexico got out to a 6-3 lead to open the first set, before the Lobos outscored Hampton 19-6 the rest of the way to establish control and take the first set 25-9.
The Lobos jumped out to a 14-2 lead to open the second half before taking it 25-11.
The opening of the third set showed the Lady Pirates at their most competitive, as the score tied seven times before either team could reach 10 points. Once Hampton tied the set at 9-9, New Mexico went on a 9-0 run to take an 18-9 lead.
The Lobos outscored Hampton 7-5 down the stretch to clinch the set and the match.
Sophomore Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) led the Lady Pirates with seven kills, hitting .043 with six errors in 23 attacks. Junior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) hit a team-best .200 with one kill and no errors in five attacks.
Sophomore Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had four kills and tied for the team high in digs on defense with four. Pagan and senior Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) also picked up four digs.
Senior Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) had nine of Hampton's 11 assists.
Kelly Williamson and Ashley Rhoades each led New Mexico with six kills. Mariah Agre had 18 assists and 11 digs.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they face tournament host Northern Arizona at 1 p.m. PST and San Jose State at 4 p.m. PST. Live video of the NAU match will be available, as will live stats for both matches, through NAU's website at www.nauathletics.com.
