PIRATE SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: BREANA NORMAN

Breana Norman won the MEAC title in the indoor 60-meter hurdles and the outdoor 100-meter hurdles this past season, and in the 2011-12 indoor season, she took MEAC crowns in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 60-meter hurdles. Her first MEAC title came as a freshman, when she won the outdoor high jump crown. So far this season, she is tied for the third-fastest time in the nation in the 60-meter hurdles.

What made you decide to come to Hampton?

(Director of Track & Field Maurice) Pierce. I played basketball and ran track in high school, but because I missed indoor season, a lot of schools wouldn't offer me a full ride. Coach P told me I could run indoor too and offered me a full ride.

Describe your experience of being a student-athlete at Hampton.

It's been interesting; it's taught me a lot about handling adversity. We don't get much around here, so we take what we can and then we go out there and run as hard as we can.

What's the biggest change you've seen in yourself between when you first got to Hampton and now?

I work a lot harder than I used to, and I'm a lot more composed and positive in my thinking.

What are some of your hobbies? What do you enjoy outside of the competitive arena and the classroom?

I like to watch movies – The Five Heartbeats is my favorite – and I like to eat and sleep.

What's your favorite food?

Pasta.

Among the teammates you've had over the years, who's been your best friend?

Teiara Denmark.

You've interacted with a lot of different staff members over the years in athletics; who has been there for you the most (not a coach)?

Mrs. Winston (Coordinator of Athletic Academic Support).

What's your major, and how did you come to choose that?

Psychology, because I'm interested in the dynamics of marriage and family, and I want to help young African-American children build better relationships with their families.

Is there anything you haven't accomplished yet at Hampton that you hope to accomplish this year?

I want to break five school records and get a 3.4 GPA.

What are your plans after graduating?

I want to get a Master's in Counseling and get a Ph.D. from UNC.

Any parting words for your teammates or anyone who may be coming to Hampton in the future?

Work hard, because no one's going to work hard for you. If you're not first, you're last.
