NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Hampton University men's and women's tennis teams both dropped matches this past weekend, each falling against Norfolk State in their 2013 season openers at Centre Court.
The Lady Pirates (0-1) fell 5-1, while the Pirates (0-1) fell 5-0 to the Spartans.
On the women's side, senior
Tabita Daolio (Centro Campinas, Brazil) picked up Hampton's lone point by defeating Laura Gutierrez 2-6, 6-3, 13-11 in the tiebreak, Andrea Macchiavello defeated
Danielle Butler (Hawthorne, Calif.) 6-0, 6-2, while Yvone Kamegne dropped
Melanie Scott (Gardena, CA) 6-0, 6-2 in the No.1 position and No.2 positions, respectively.
Rebecca Graff closed it out for Norfolk State with a 6-2, 6-2 win over
Renee Henry (St. George's Antigua & Barbuda) in the No.4 singles position.
In doubles, the Spartans cruised, as Macchiavello and Kamegne dropped Butler and Daolio 8-2. Gutierrez and Lhorca defeated Henry and Scott 8-2. The Spartans won the No. 3 position doubles point by default.
On the men's side, the Spartans won all four singles matches played. In the No.1 position,
Park Wan-Young (Daeduk-Gu, Daejeon) fell to Igor Braga 6-4, 7-6. Dzmitry Zhymantovich defeated
Advait Kirtane (Toronto, Ontario) 6-1, 3-0 at the No.2 position, and Robin Riethmueller defeated
Alvin Fludd (Suitland, MD) 6-3, 6-0.
In the No. 4 position,
Lakshmana Satchithananthan (Toronto, Ontario) fell to Peter Rastromer-Pello 6-0, 6-0.
The Spartans claimed the doubles point, as Braga and Zhymantovich defeated Park and Kirtane 6-4, while Braga and Riethmueller dropped Fludd and
Joshua McQueen (Miramar, Fl) 8-2. Other matches played were called due to the fact the match was a first-to-four points competition.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action when they head to Daytona Beach, Fla. on Feb. 15 to play in the Bethune-Cookman Invite.
