NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton University freshman
Deron Powers was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Year, as the conference office announced its 2012-13 men's basketball honors on Sunday.
Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) was also named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team.
He led the Pirates (14-16, 11-5 MEAC) in scoring this season with 11.9 points per game, while also ranking fourth in the MEAC with 4.8 assists per contest. He was the conference's top freshman in both categories.
Powers was also second in the MEAC in free throw percentage (.837) and fifth in assist-turnover ratio (1.3). He scored in double figures 21 times this season, including a career-high 22 against Howard on Dec. 1.
He tallied double-digit assists five times, dishing out a career-high 12 against Delaware State on Feb. 11.
Norfolk State's Pendarvis Williams was named MEAC Player of the Year, while Norfolk State'S Anthony Evans was named Coach of the Year. Austin Witter of North Carolina A&T was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year.
Powers and the Pirates, the No. 3 seed, will play in Thursday's quarterfinal round at 6 p.m. at Norfolk Scope Arena against either No. 6 Delaware State or No. 11 Howard. The Pirates swept the regular season series with both teams.
