PIRATES FALL TO NJIT ON THE ROAD

NEWARK, N.J. – The Hampton University men's basketball team dropped its non-conference finale on Monday, falling 86-67 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology at the Fleischer Athletic Center.
The Pirates dropped to 8-14 on the season.
Junior guard Reginald Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) dropped a career-high 27 points to lead four Pirates in double figures, going 10-for-17 from the floor and hitting five 3-pointers. Guard Quinton Chievous (Chicago, Ill.), junior guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.), and junior forward Jervon Pressley (Charlotte, N.C.) each added 11 points.
Pressley also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Pirates shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the floor and made six of their 17 3-pointers (35.3 percent).
Pressley gave the Pirates a 5-2 lead in the opening minutes of the contest, before the Highlanders went on a 12-3 run to take a 14-9 lead at the 12:55 mark of the first half. A layup from Johnson at the 10:53 mark cut the lead to 20-17, before NJIT went on a 14-6 run to take a 34-23 lead.
Hampton scored the next four points to cut the lead to 34-27, before the Highlanders closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 45-29 lead into the break.
Johnson had 13 points in the first half.
NJIT opened the second half on a 16-5 run, taking a 61-34 lead with 14:44 left to play. Hampton answered with a 20-10 run, cutting the Highlanders' lead to 71-54 on a layup from Johnson with 7:00 left to play.
A free throw from junior guard Breon Key (Hampton, Va.) with 4:12 remaining cut the lead to 78-62, but that was as close as the Pirates would get.
NJIT outscored Hampton 8-5 down the stretch.
NJIT (13-10) shot 58.5 percent (31-for-53) from the floor and made 13 of 22 3-pointers (59.1 percent). The Highlanders also out-rebounded the Pirates 36-24.
Lynn led six Highlanders in double figures with 18 points.
