HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's tennis team started a three-match homestand on Wednesday morning with a 7-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Sophomore Steffy Paez achieved a rarity in tennis to lead the Lady Pirates on Wednesday by winning a "Golden Match" at the fifth line of singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tearraney Peak. In the match, Paez didn't lose a point the entire match. The win for Paez snapped a three-match losing skid for the native of Columbia.
The doubles tandems of Mariam Mitaishvii and Mikaela Pierce won at number one, Julia d'Auvergne and Cherise Slocombe at number two and Anastasiia Romanova and Paez at number three all won 6-0. In singles, Mitaishvii won 6-1, 6-1 at number one while Slocombe, Pierce, d'Auvergne and Romanova joined Paez with 6-0, 6-0 wins.
The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against North Carolina Central University.
