NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton Lady Pirates women's tennis team battled defending champion South Carolina State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship match and fell in a tightly-contested 4-3 match at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center at Old Dominion University Saturday.
SCSU (8-7) has won the last two MEAC titles and 12 of the last 13 crowns.  This was Hampton's (12-5) first appearance in the MEAC finals since winning it last in 2004.
The doubles point was taken by Hampton with the top two lines winning matches. At line #1 Mariam Mitaishvili and Kristina Titova defeated Intissar Rassif and Andjela Vasic 6-1, while at line #2 the tandem of Mikaela Pierce and Cherise Slocombe defeated Marketa Marcanikova and Claudia Roca 6-2. Both Hampton teams were later named to the All-Tournament team.
In singles, Titova and Mitaishvili each won their matches at line #1 and #2 respectively 6-2, 6-2 to give Hampton two more points. The Bulldogs took singles wins at lines #4-6 in straight sets to force the deciding match at line #3. SCSU scored a three-set win 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the championship.
Titova and Mitaishvili were each named to the All-Tournament team for singles as they both went undefeated this weekend in singles.  On the year, Titova finished 11-4 and Mitaishvili was 11-5 in singles while as a doubles tandem they were 12-3.Â
Over the last 10 years, the 11 wins for Titova and Mitaishvili are tied for the sixth most. The doubles mark of 12-3 is the best record by a Hampton tandem in the last 10 years. The 12 wins on the year is the most by a Hampton team since the 2007 squad went 15-6.
