LYNCHBURG, Va. – Both Hampton University track teams had standout performances this past weekend in the Liberty Collegiate Invitational held in Lynchburg. No team scores were kept in the 26-team meet.
The men had three first place finishes as
Justin Beatty won the 400 meters in 48.00,
Jaelen Williams took the 400 hurdles in 51.97 and the 4x400 relay team of Williams, Beatty, Black and Johnson ran a 3:17.50. Beatty and Williams ran season best times, while all three qualified for the ECAC meet in a month with their performances. Williams ran the second fastest time of the year in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in that event.
Finishing second was Williams in the 110 hurdles (14.67), the 4x100 relay team of Brenan Garrett,
Isaac Arriola,
Trey Clark and
Isaiah Norris (42.58). Both were season best times, while Williams qualified for the ECAC meet with his time.
In the decathlon,
Desmond Lindsey topped three Hampton finishers in the top 10 with a sixth-place showing scoring a MEAC season best 5,575 points.
Jerrick Powell was nine points behind in seventh with 5.566 and his total is the second best in the MEAC this season.
On the women's side,
Faith Keitany (17:16.89) and
Janet Okeago (17:23.87) went 1-2 in the 5000 meters in the top two times thus far this year in the MEAC. Another MEAC best performance came by
Ayana Culhane in the javelin with a toss of 41.49m (136-1) to take second place.
Kaitlin Scott took third in the heptathlon with 4,342 points for the best score by a MEAC competitor this year as well.
Other first place finishers included Kylie Mcmillan in the 100 hurdles (14.34), the 4x100 quartet of
Tiara Robinson, Mallory PItchford,
Jaelen Leonard and
Sashana Hinds in 46.97 and the 4x400 quartet of
Alysha Evans, Leonard,
Erin Morrison and Hinds in 3:52.91. Mcmillan in the 100 hurdles and the 4x100 group qualified for the ECAC meet with their performances.
Second place finishers included a 4x100 group of Evans, Mcmillan, Morrison and
Ka'Ena Farmer in 48.74,
Jayme Thomas in the triple jump with a leap of 11.34meters (27-2.5). Third place finishers included Leonard in the long jump (5.67m-18-7.25) and Hinds in the 400 meters in 57.07.
Both teams will now participate in the Gamecock Invitational next Saturday in Columbia, S.C.
