ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The 2019 Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships started on Wednesday in Rock Hill, S.C. at Winthrop University and the Hampton Lady Pirates are sitting first after day one with 46 points.
Hampton, who won the Indoor Track and Field Championships in February, hold an 11 point lead on Campbell with High Point trailing in third with 27 points.
Ayana Culhane won the javelin with a toss of 135'2, while
Jaelan Leonard took the title in the long jump with a leap of 18'11.25.  The Lady Pirates scored 21 points in the javelin as Culhane won with
Crystal Eley coming in second (117'2) and
Kaitlin Scott coming in sixth (110'1).
Wednesday events breakdown
Heptathlon
Kaitlin Scott leads after day one with 3,101 points, followed by teammate
Crystal Eley with 2,930. Scott had the best time in the 100 hurdles (14.16), second best high jump (1.59m – 5-2.5), the best shot put by over two feet with a toss of 11.30 meters (37-1) and second best 200 meters in 25,90.
Eley was on her heels through day one finishing third in the 100 hurdles (14.74), fifth in the high jump (1.53m), second in the shot put (10.64m/34'11) and won the 200 meters in 25.65.
Also sitting in the top eight for Hampton is
Sydney Davis in sixth (2.531) and
Kameryn Trussell (2,382) in eighth.
Discus
The first points of the 2019 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships were awarded in the discus as Hampton went 2-3. Senior
Corneisha Mitchell took second with a toss of 45.93 meters (150-8) and junior
Kiyanna Thomas took third with a throw of 44.24 meters (145-2) to give Hampton 14 points.
Javelin
Hampton came away with 21 points in that event with a 1-2-6 finish as
Ayana Culhane threw 41.19meters (135-2) to win the event and
Crystal Eley came in second with a throw of 35.72 meters (117-2).Â
Kaitlin Scott took sixth with a toss of 33.55 meters (110-1).
Long Jump
Jaelan Leonard won the long jump title with a leap of 5.77 meters (18-11.25) to give Hampton 10 points. Â
10,000 meters
Pollyanna Velasco scored one team point for Hampton in the last race on Wednesday night with an eighth place showing in the 10,000 meters in a time of 39:59.53.
400 hurdles - prelims
Hampton had two qualifiers for the finals from Wednesday's prelims as
Autumn Smith had a meet best time 1:00.12, while
Crystal Eley qualified eighth for the finals in 1:04.72.
1500 meters – prelims
Pollyanna Velasco qualified for the 1500 meter finals with a time of 4:49.90 to rank ninth heading into the finals.
200 meters - prelims
Hampton had three finish in the top eight after Wednesday's prelims behind a leading time from
Isis Brooks (23.79).Â
Asha Copeland qualified fifth in 24.36 and Leonard qualified seventh in 24.60.
