NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -  The Hampton men's basketball team headed into Charleston Southern and took down the Buccaneers 78-74 on Saturday.
 
Forward Najee Garvin scores a season-high 28 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win. Guard Russell Dean followed up Garvin with 22 points of his own as well as six rebounds and six assists. Forward DeAngelo Epps chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds.
 
The Pirates and Buccaneers played a nip and tuck first half, however, Hampton found themselves down by five points with 5:01 remaining in the first half. They would go on to close the half on a 16-8 run, putting them up 45-42.
 
With stout defense and excellent shooting, as Hampton finished the game shooting 52.8 percent from the floor, the Pirates lead extended to as many as 10 points in the second half with 12 minutes to go. The Buccaneers would tie the game at 73 with 2:20 remaining in the game, but clutch free-throws down the stretch from both Epps and Dean helped seal the victory.
 
The Pirates return home on Wednesday, February 2 to take on USC Upstate a 7p.m. on ESPN+.
