Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC- Pirates Fall Short to High Point in Overtime 84-77 in the opening round of the Big South Tournament.
Junior guard Russell "Deuce" Dean led all scorers in the contest with a 26-point performance.
Najee Garvin followed up, recording a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Hampton shot 40 percent (23 of 57) from the field, 13 percent (2 of 15) from behind the arc, and 73 percent (29 of 40) at the line.
High Point shot 38 percent from the field (27 of 71), 35 percent (8 of 23) from behind the arc and went 56 percent (22 of 39) at the line.
The Pirates got off to a solid start dominating the Panthers in the paint to claim a 10-point lead with 10:48 remaining in the opening half.
High Point struggled to knock down shots early, shooting 25 percent (5 of 20) from the field to Hampton's 50 percent (7 of 14).
Despite the rocky start, the Panthers closed out the first half on a 24-5 run sending the Pirates into the half trailing High Point 39 – 28.
The biggest difference from how the Pirates started and ended the opening half was turnovers. High Point scored 16 unanswered points of HU's nine turnovers in the half.
The Pirates opened the second half going on a 15-6 run to make it a one-possession game.
Marquis Godwin knocked down a three-pointer to score his first points of the game, swinging momentum in the Pirate's favor. HU forced a turnover on the next Panther's possession and scored four more unanswered points, making it a 46-43 HPU lead with 14:11 left to play.
Both teams exchanged the lead before High Point was able to pull ahead 61-57 with 5:42 remaining in the game.
With just under four minutes left in the game, Hampton captured its first lead of the second half, 64-63, after Godwin scored five points and Dean went 2 of 2 at the line.
Another momentum-changing three-pointer from Godwin made it a single-point game, both teams traded baskets, and every time High Point seemed to count HU out, the Pirates responded.
Dean sent the game into overtime 71-all, with the Pirates final four points of regulation coming at the line.
Unfortunately, Dean fouled out the game with 2:19 left to play, a huge loss for the Pirates. HU still had some fight left in them, however time and foul trouble was not on Pirate's side.
The Pirates came up short, dropping the game 84-77 in overtime after both of HU's lead scorers fouled out in the final minutes of OT.
