HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University volleyball team dropped their home CAA debut falling to the University of Delaware (18-25, 15-25, 9-25) Saturday afternoon inside Holland Hall. The setback moves the Lady Pirates to a 3-3 mark on the young season, while Delaware raises its record to 7-4.
Â
After a tough first set, the Lady Pirates opened up set two with sturdy blocks from
Rickelle Wescott and
Madison Clark, capped by steady kills from
Clara Smith. Nevertheless, University of Delaware kept their energy up and brought back 13 kills. The Pirates responded with calculated digs from
Leanna Caldwell and a consistent flow of ball movement from the whole team. In spite of their tenacity, the Lady Pirates lost set two with a 15-25 match point on the board.
Â
Heading into the third set, momentum was on the Lady Pirates side as the team started off swinging, with kills from
Clara Smith and
Gabby Calloway. Back-to Back blocks from
Rickelle Wescott and
Madison Clark kept Hampton above water, along with steady movement on the floor, but that wasn't enough for Hampton to take the win.
Â
The teams will close out the weekend with a match on Sunday at 2 p.m. inside Holland Hall.
