PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 12, 2024) … The Hampton University men's basketball team fell to Providence inside Amica Mutal Pavilion 60-51. The contest proved to be a defensive battle with both teams struggling to find their rhythm on the offensive end. While the Friars shot 43.2 percent from the field, the Pirates controlled the tempo and took 10 more shots than PC. Coach Ivan Thomas's side received production from the bench.

Providence got on the board first with a three-pointer from Jayden Pierre. Heading into the first media timeout of the night, Hampton was only down by five. While the Friars opened the contest on an 8-0 run, the Pirates had only given up eight points in the first five minutes. After George Beale Jr. forced a turnover HU got on the board with a pull-up jumper from Tyler Rice.

Hampton's defense continued to hold the Frair's offense silent. The Pirates were able to take the lead when Noah Farrakhan went 3-3 from the free-throw line. Coach Ivan Thomas's squad went 16-0 run to go up by eight at the 7:01 mark. Providence ended an eight-minute scoring drought with another three from Pierre.

While the Friars cut HU's advantage down to three in the waning moments of the first half, the Pirates continued to battle. Hampton had success by forcing turnovers and dominating the offensive glass. The Pirates forced nine turnovers which led to 12 points and tallied five more offensive boards than Providence. In the final minute, Xzaiver Long produced five points for Hampton. With Long's offensive production, the Pirates entered the half up 30-22.

In the second half, the Friars threw the first punch with Wesley Cardet hitting a three after forcing a turnover. Pierre brought it back to within one possession on a pull-up jumper from inside the paint. The Elizabeth, N.J. native finished the contest with 13 points. Farrakhan scored the Pirate's first points of the final 20 minutes keeping the lead intact.

Both Hampton and Providence continued to trade blows. The Friars would take its first lead of the night since the 9:12 mark in the first half with a three from Joseph Bensley. With Farrakhan's production, the Pirates were able to keep the game within striking distance. With less than 10 minutes to go freshman Richard Goods hit a three-pointer as the shot clock went off.

Throughout the final 10 minutes of the contest, Hampton continued to receive production from its bench. Trevor Smith answered Goods's three with a made jumper from beyond the arc tying the contest at 42-42. Smith down the stretch scored 11 points for the Pirates tying his career-high.

After the final media timeout, the Friars rallied to take a nine-point advantage at the 2:11 mark. While Hampton brought it to within five, Providence hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the 60-51 win.

Farrakhan led the Pirates in scoring with a season-high 16 points. The Newark, N.J. native, drew five fouls and went 6-7 from the charity stripe. Hampton's bench accounted for 68 percent of the team's total points. The Pirates return to action inside the Convocation Center against Norfolk State. Saturday's matchup is set to begin at 8:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
