HAMPTON, Va. (March 6, 2024) – Freshman track & field athlete
Leo Davis will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships this Thursday through Saturday, March 7-9. The event will take place at the Track at New Balance in Boston, Mass.
A native of Williamsburg, Va., Davis is set to perform at 4:50 p.m. on Friday, March 8, in the semifinals of the 800m event. Sixteen athletes will compete in two heats of eight runners. The top three times of each heat will automatically qualify for the final, along with the next two best times. The 800m final will take place on Saturday, March 9, at 4:30 p.m.
Davis qualified in the 800m event with the 12th-fastest time in the country. His time of 1:47.05 not only won him first place at the South Carolina Invitational but also set a new record for the Coastal Athletic Conference.
Davis is the first freshman to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Hampton's history. In the men's field, there are only 14 other freshmen who qualified and who are not competing in relays. The last Pirate to qualify for the indoor championship was senior Trey Holloway in the 60m hurdles back in 2016.
In the Pirates history, there have been five NCAA Track and Field Champions. Yvette Lewis won the triple jump twice (2006 Indoor, 2007 Outdoor) and Francena McCorory the 400m dash three times (2009 Indoor and 2010 Indoor and Outdoor). No male athlete for Hampton has ever won a track & field NCAA National Championship event.
