Hampton, Va. – The Hampton University Department of Athletics will honor women's basketball Division I all-time leading scorer,
Malia Tate-DeFreitas on Saturday, Dec. 3 at halftime of the men's basketball game against William & Mary, which will start at 4 p.m.
In her three-plus seasons at Hampton, Tate-DeFreitas has earned MEAC Rookie of the Year honors her freshman year, before being named the MEAC Player of the Year in both her sophomore and junior seasons. She scored her first point at Hampton on Nov. 10, 2013 and the rest is history.
She went on to score her 1,000
th career point on Jan. 26, 2015, as a sophomore, when she scored 37 points against South Carolina State, becoming the 27
th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. On Nov. 16 of this season, she scored 16 points to put her over the mark as Hampton's Div. I all-time leading scorer with 1,982 total points.
It only took her two more games to pass the 2,000-point mark when she scored 28 points against St. Peter's on Nov. 21. She is only the second player in Hampton women's basketball history to score over 2,000 career points.
To date, Tate-DeFreitas has scored 2,066 points in her Hampton career.
Tate-DeFreitas is a senior guard from Harrisburg, Pa., where she attended Steelton-Highspire High School. While at Steelton-Highspire, she earned team MVP honors all four years while scoring more than 3,000 career points. She graduate high school as the school's all-time leading scorer, male or female.
She also won three district championships and two state titles.
The Hampton Department of Athletics invites all fans, alumni, and supporters to come out and see the men's basketball team in action on Saturday, and help the department honor Tate-DeFreitas on her recent accomplishments.
