PIRATES DROP WORLD VISION OPENER TO PEPPERDINE

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Hampton University men's basketball team dropped its first game of the World Vision Basketball Classic hosted by the University of Wyoming Friday night, falling 75-66 to Pepperdine University at the Arena-Auditorium.
Pepperdine led by as much as 11 in the second half, holding that advantage briefly when Dane Suttle Jr. banked in a layup with 3:36 to play to give the Waves a 67-56 lead. From that point, Hampton would pull within six on a 3-pointer from Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) with 2:38 remaining, but the Waves answered half a minute later on a layup by Taylor Darby.
From there, Hampton would get no closer than seven points back.
Four Pirates scored in double figures, led by Pellum and Michael Freeman (Alexandria, Va.), who each scored 16 points. Freeman went 4-for-7 from the floor and 8-for-14 from the free throw line, while Pellum went 5-for-15 from the floor, hitting five 3-pointers. Charles Funches (Bayonne, N.J.) scored 11 points to go along with his team-high nine rebounds, and Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 10 points.
The Pirates (0-5) went 17-for-55 (30.9 percent) from the floor and 8-for-30 (26.7 percent) from 3-point range, while the Waves shot 51.0 percent (26-for-51) from the floor and 38.9 percent (7-for-18) from 3-point range. Pepperdine also held a 36-35 rebounding advantage.
The Pirates did force Pepperdine into 19 turnovers, turning them into 24 points.
Suttle led the Waves (2-3) with 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort from behind the arc. Keion Bell went 6-for-9 from the floor to score 18 points.
Hampton opened the game on an 8-0 run, thanks to a pair of Pellum 3-pointers and a Simpson layup. That lead would expand to 10-4 at the 16:06 mark of the first half, when Freeman would hit his first basket of the game, but the Waves would go on a 17-9 run to take the lead with 5:40 left in the half on a Suttle 3-pointer.
Pepperdine led 21-19 at that point, and the Waves never looked back.
The Pirates shot 40.0 percent (10-for-25) in the first half, making five of 15 3-point attempts. The Waves shot 48.0 percent (12-for-25) in the opening frame, led by 18 points from Suttle. Pellum led the Pirates with 12 heading into the half, with Pepperdine holding a 31-28 lead.
