LADY PIRATES FALL TO SDSU IN WNIT SECOND ROUND

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Hampton University women's basketball team fell 76-64 to South Dakota State Monday night at Frost Arena in the second round of the Preseason WNIT, despite three Lady Pirates in double figures.

Junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) poured in a career-high 20 points on 6-for-14 shooting, going 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 15 points and senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) scored 10 points.

Perry and senior guard Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) each pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Jackrabbits took a 35-33 lead into the half, and a pair of Jennie Sunnarborg free throws with 16:07 remaining gave SDSU a 7-point lead, 43-36. Hampton went on a 7-1 run, cutting SDSU's lead to 44-43 on a layup from Warner with 13:36 to play.

Sunnarborg's layup with 8:55 left gave SDSU a 55-48 lead, but junior center Sherena Abercrumbia (Dallas, Texas) pulled the Lady Pirates within three, 55-52, with a layup at the 7:32 mark.

SDSU responded with a 13-5 run, culminating with 1:49 to play when Leah Dietel sank two free throws to put the Jackrabbits up 68-57.

The Jackrabbits made all 10 free throw attempts in the final two minutes.

The Lady Pirates (1-1) shot 33.9 percent (20-for-59) from the floor, making seven of 17 3-point attempts and shooting 70.8 percent (17-for-24) from the free throw line. South Dakota State (2-0) shot 48.0 percent (24-for-50) and out-rebounded Hampton 37-34.

Sunnarborg led the Jackrabbits with a career-high 24 points, while Dietel added 14 points and seven rebounds. Jill Young and Kristin Rotert each added 13 points for SDSU.

The Jackrabbits advanced to the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT; they will face Purdue on Thursday.
