HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished third in the Henry Luce Regatta, which was held Saturday and Sunday at Strawberry Banks amid strong, cold winds and rain.
The Pirates finished with 34 points. Christopher Newport won the regatta with 23 points, two points ahead of second-place Villanova.
Freshman
Giuditta Di Laghi (Albenga, Italy) and senior
Hykeem Gaddis (Las Vegas, Nev.) raced in the A Division, tallying 14 points thanks to a win and two second-place finishes; Di Laghi and Gaddis never finished worse than third in their six races.
Sophomore
Simon Kimannee (St. Georges, Grenada) and freshman
Albert Toledo (Istanbul, Turkey) raced in the B Division, recording 20 points. Sophomore
Joshua Gopeesingh (San Juan, Puerto Rico) also ran in one race.
The B Division recorded two second-place finishes.
The Pirates will return to action as a team on Saturday and Sunday, when they travel to Charleston, S.C. for the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional. Di Laghi will be in Chicago, Ill. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to compete in the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship.
