NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University women's tennis team scored a 4-0 victory over Florida A&M University on Thursday morning in the opening round of the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Championships at Old Dominion University.
With the win Hampton (11-4) advances to face Morgan State on Friday morning at 9 am in the semifinals at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Bears defeated Bethune-Cookman 4-3 in the second quarterfinal round Thursday.
The Lady Pirates took the doubles point with wins at line #1 and line #2. Mariam Mitaishvili and Kristina Titova scored a quick 6-0 win over Arrice Robinson and Sophia Osabouhlen at the top spot. The Rattlers responded with a 6-2 win at #3 doubles to force the deciding match at #2. After being down a break on a couple of occasions, the tandem of Mikaela Pierce and Cherise Slocombe defeated Dominique Henry and Elizabeth Clayton 7-5.
In singles, Hampton scored wins at lines #2-4 to lock up the victory. Haley Mullins won the first match topping Karen Machisa 6-1, 6-3 at line #4 for a 2-0 lead. Not long after Mullins got her victory, Mitaishvili took a 6-0, 6-4 win over Robinson at line #2 to push the Hampton lead to 3-0.
At line #3, Slocombe pulled out a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over Henry to clinch the match after winning the last couple games of the second set.
This marks the first time Hampton has advanced to the semifinals since 2009 when they defeated North Carolina A&T State 4-0 and then lost to Florida A&M 4-1.
