NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Hampton University women's indoor track and field team opened the 2019 portion of their schedule on Friday night with capturing the HBCU Battle held at The Armory.
Hampton amassed 149 points to outdistance Howard (133) and Morgan State (130.5) out of a field of 12 teams.
The Lady Pirates had five first place finishes as
Zuri Rashad took the 3000 meters (11:15.94),
Mallory Pitchford won the 60 hurdles (8.59),
Jaelen Leonard won the long jump (18-7.75),
Ayana Culhane took the shot put (44-11.75) and
Corneisha Mitchell won the weight throw (52-8.25).
Sophomore
Isis Brooks was third in the 60 meters (7.70) and the 200 meters (25.27). Rashad also had a pair of top four finishes by taking fourth in the mile (5:37.79) to go with her winning the 3000.
Hampton was boosted by a pair of events where they garnered 24 points in the 60 hurdles and shot put. The hurdles saw Hampton go 1-2-5-7 as Kylie Mcmillan took second (8.65),
Autumn Smith was fifth (8.99) and
Faith McMillan was seventh (9.15) behind Pitchford. In the shot put, Culhane won with
Kiyanna Thomas coming in second (42-10.25) and Mitchell was third (41-1).
On Saturday, they competed in the Great Dane Classic held at the University of Albany where Pitchford took second in the 60 meters (7.58),
Isis Brooks took fifth in the 200 meters (25.01) and
Faith McMillan was eighth in the 60 hurdles (9.49) to highlight the finalists.
They'll next compete at the VMI Invite on January 18-19.
