TIMMONS BUZZER BEATER LIFTS LADY PIRATES OVER ALABAMA
11.6.19 | Women's Basketball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Graduate student MaKayla Timmons made her Hampton University debut a memorable one with a 3-pointer at the buzzer as Hampton knocked off Alabama 64-61 in the season opener on Wednesday.
The win by Hampton was the 12th for head coach David Six over a "Power 5" Conference as they last defeated North Carolina 70-66 on Nov. 10, 2017. That was the fifth win by Six over a member of the SEC having defeated Florida (2010-11), Mississippi State and LSU (2012-13), Auburn (2014-15) and now Alabama.
Hampton trailed 54-49 with 3:03 left after a layup by Jordan Lewis. Five straight points by Laren VanArsdale tied the game as a bucket from a Timmons feed evened the game at 54 with 2:08 remaining.
Each team then hit a 3-pointer with VanArsdale answering to tie the game at 57 with 52 seconds. Charlisa Jenkins and Ashley Bates each hit a pair of free throws to push Hampton ahead 61-59 with 21 seconds left. Ariyah Copeland nailed a putback with six seconds remaining to tie the game at 61.
VanArsdale got the inbounds pass after a Hampton timeout and found Timmons from the top of the key for a 3-pointer and the win.
Hampton opened the game pressuring the Tide into an 0-for-12 from the field in the first quarter and for the night held Alabama to 17-of-62 from the floor (27.2%).
VanArsdale was the leading scorer with 17 points, while Bates added 16 with five assists and four steals and Timmons had 10 for Hampton.
The Lady Pirates return to action on Saturday visiting Chattanooga for a 2pm tip.
