FARMVILLE, Va. – Behind two hits and two runs scored by
DaSha Hill and three RBIs from
Kial Watts the Hampton Lady Pirates split a Big South Conference doubleheader with league-leading Longwood on Tuesday winning the nightcap 5-3. Longwood scored an 8-0 five-inning win in game one.
The win for Hampton in game two snapped a 17-game losing streak to Longwood as the Lady Pirates won the inaugural meeting in 1997 at the Lady Pirates Classic 3-1 on March 28.
In the top of the first,
Taylor Warrick and Hill started with singles and both moved up a base after an error. Following an out, Watts laid down a bunt that Warrick beat the play to the plate for the first run. She then stole second and Hill scored on an error which moved Watts to third for a 2-0 lead.
The next inning saw the Lady Pirates put up a three-spot all with two outs.Â
Casey Walker walked and stole second before Warrick drew a walk. Hill reached on an error allowing Walker to score before a passed ball moved both Warrick and Hill up a base. Watts followed with a single up the middle to plate both runs for a 5-0 lead.
Behind the pitching of
Allie Hotetz, the Lady Pirates kept Longwood off the board until the sixth inning when they touched the plate three times. In the seventh
Allyson Babinsack came in and allowed one hit but shut down the Lancers to earn her second save of the season. Â
Game one saw Sydney Backstrom throw a five-inning no-hitter as a Hill walk in the third inning was the lone baserunner for Hampton.
These teams will close out the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon in a 4pm start at Lancer Field.
